Earl Thompson Ingarfield senior (born October 25, 1934 in Lethbridge , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach . The center played over 700 games for the New York Rangers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Oakland / California Golden Seals in the National Hockey League between 1958 and 1971 . He then worked briefly in the NHL as head coach for the New York Islanders .
Career
As a player
Earl Ingarfield played in his youth for the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Lethbridge Native Sons from his hometown in the Western Canada Junior Hockey League (WCJHL). After he had participated with the Native Sons in 1953 , he reached the final of the Memorial Cup in 1955 with the Regina Pats , but lost to the Toronto Marlboros . For the 1955/56 season he moved permanently to the Saskatoon Quakers in the Western Hockey League and thus in the professional field, after he had completed two WHL games for the Vancouver Canucks the year before . As a result, the attacker spent three years in the WHL, where he ran two seasons at the Winnipeg Warriors and came for the team in the 1957/58 season on 80 scorer points in 64 games.
With this achievement Ingarfield recommended himself for the National Hockey League (NHL), so that he was committed in 1958 by the New York Rangers . After sparse working times at the beginning and half a season with the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League (AHL), he finally established himself with the beginning of the 1960/61 season in the NHL squad of Rangers. The following year, the center forward recorded his career record with 57 points from 70 games, before playing over 500 games for the "Broadway Blueshirts" over the course of the following seasons. In June 1965, he was handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal along with Noel Price , Gord Labossiere , Dave McComb and a financial consideration , which in return sent Cesare Maniago and Garry Peters to New York. However, he only returned to the Rangers for one day via the NHL Intra-League Draft .
His time in New York ended when he was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft . In their second NHL season, Ingarfield took over the captaincy of Ab McDonald , but only held this until January 1969, when he was transferred to the Oakland Seals along with Gene Ubriaco and Dick Mattiussi . The team, which, like the Penguins, had only joined the league in 1967, sent Bryan Watson , George Swarbrick and Tracy Pratt to Pittsburgh. For the Seals, which traded as California Golden Seals from 1970 , the Canadian played his last season in 1970/71 and then ended his active career. In total, Ingarfield had completed 767 NHL games and recorded 422 points.
As a trainer
With the end of his active career, Ingarfield took over the position of head coach at the Regina Pats. In 1973, however, he returned to the NHL when he succeeded Phil Goyette, who was dismissed during the season, with the New York Islanders . The team was in its debut season, so it won only 6 of 30 games under Ingarfield's direction. He was subsequently replaced by Al Arbor for the new season , while he returned to his hometown after a brief hiatus and was head coach of the Lethbridge Broncos from 1974 to 1976 . This marked his last station as a trainer, so that Ingarfield - except for a job as a scout for the New York Islanders - largely withdrew from professional ice hockey.
