Ronald Lawrence "Ron" shock (* 19th December 1943 in Chapleau , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1961 to 1980 among other 964 games for the Boston Bruins , St. Louis Blues , Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabers has played in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . His younger brother Danny was also a hockey player.
Career
Ron Schock began his career as a professional ice hockey player in the Ontario Hockey Association with the Niagara Falls Flyers , for whom he was on the ice from 1961 to 1964. In the 1963/64 season he also made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins . There he was able to establish himself little by little, in the meantime spent a season with the San Francisco Seals in the Western Hockey League .
As part of the NHL expansion of the Original Six to twelve franchises , Schock was transferred to the newly recorded St. Louis Blues at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft from the Bruins . For the Blues he was in action for the next two seasons. Schock became famous for his "midnight goal", which he scored on the occasion of the seventh and decisive game of the Stanley Cup semi-finals on May 3, 1968 between the St. Louis Blues and the Minnesota North Stars. The goal came in the second extra time and gave the Blues the final in their first NHL season, which they lost 4-0 against the Canadiens de Montréal . This surprising success was arguably a major reason for the early popularity of the St. Louis Blues in the NHL.
During his time with the Blues, he was said to have been asked at a dinner which team he was most likely to switch to. Shock responded with the New York Rangers or the Pittsburgh Penguins . Two days later he was under contract with the Penguins, who had signed him in exchange for Brian Spencer . He stayed in Pittsburgh for the next eight seasons, the last four of which he was allowed to wear the armband.
There was another season with the Buffalo Sabers and two seasons in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears and the Rochester Americans before he announced his retirement. In a total of 15 seasons in the NHL, Schock played 909 games, scoring 166 goals and providing 351 assists, making a total of 517 points.
