Orest Michael Kindrachuk (born September 14, 1950 in Nanton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player with US citizenship who played 584 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals in the course of his playing career between 1967 and 1981 of the National Hockey League on the position of the center . With the Philadelphia Flyers, Kindrachuk won the Stanley Cup twice in a row in 1974 and 1975 as part of the so-called "Broad Street Bullies" and was the fifth team captain in the franchise history of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1978 to 1981 .
Career
Kindrachuk spent his junior years between 1967 and 1971 with the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Canada Hockey League . The striker played there for two years before he began to put his junior career on hold and devote himself to his studies at the University of Saskatchewan . Since he openly stated that he had no interest in a professional career and would rather work in the optometry industry, he was not selected by any team in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft . It was not until the 1970/71 season that Kindrachuk returned to the league as a so-called Overage player. He scored 149 points scorer , including 100 assists alone, and was finally signed in July 1971 by the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League as a free agent .
In the 1971/72 season , the 21-year-old finally switched to the professional field. The Flyers used the junior player in his first year with the San Diego Gulls in the Western Hockey League , then for a season with the Richmond Robins in the American Hockey League . With the beginning of the 1973/74 season , Kindrachuk was firmly in Philadelphia's squad, having made his debut in two NHL games the previous year. With the Flyers, he won in his NHL rookie year at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1974 as part of the so-called "Broad Street Bullies" the Stanley Cup , which the Flyers in the following year successfully defended. In total, the attacker stayed in the Philadelphia squad for five seasons before the Canadian was handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in June 1978 together with Ross Lonsberry and Tom Bladon in exchange for a first-round vote in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft .
At the Penguins, Kindrachuk took over the position of team captain immediately after the change , making him the fifth player in franchise history to hold this post. He filled the office for the entire duration of his engagement with Pittsburgh. At the end of the 1980/81 season , in which he had only played 13 games due to problems with the intervertebral discs , the Penguins finally terminated his contract prematurely. He then moved as a free agent to the Washington Capitals , where he declared his career ended at the age of 31 after four missions at the beginning of the season due to persistent injury problems.
