history

Estialescq was first mentioned in 1383 in the form of Estheles in a manuscript by the notary Luntz. In a census in 1385, 37 households in Esquialest were counted and it was noted that the village belongs to the Bailliage of Oloron. At that time the parish had a pastor, a blacksmith , a nobleman and a quarter that was reserved for members of the Cagots . These were a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and were largely excluded from social life. In 1400 the parish landlord , Espalle de Lane, was a wealthy merchant from Oloron.

Other toponyms and mentions of Estialescq were:

  • Estielesc (13th century, census des Béarn),
  • Esquielest (1399, manuscript by the notary of Gots),
  • Estialesc (1405, Navarrenx notaries ),
  • Istaliecxs and Estyalescxs (1546 and 1548, respectively, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • Sanctus Vincentius d'Estialescq (1612, publications of the Diocese of Oloron ),
  • Estialesc (1750, map by Cassini ) and
  • Estialescq (1793, Notice Communale).

From the Gallo-Roman period until the 19th century, Estialescq had a specialization in the production of lime due to numerous quarries in the municipality. The Via Tolosana , the southernmost of the four Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela , crosses the municipality.
