history

The Viscount Gaston VII of Béarn gave the settlement of Bunhen the status of a bastide . At the same time he offered the serfs their release in the form of a contract for an annual payment. Bugnein was mentioned in the 13th century as Bunhen in den fors de Béarn , and in 1334 as Bugnhenh by the notaries from Navarrenx . Work on the bastide was interrupted in 1348 due to the outbreak of the plague . On June 3, 1351 Viscount Gaston III halved . , called Fébus, halved the contract quota, which meant that the area of the projected bastide was halved. In the Béarn census of 1385, 56 households were counted in Vunhenh and it was noted that the parish is in the Bailliage of Navarrenx. Further toponyms of the municipality were subsequently Sent Johan de Bunhenh (1396, notaries of Navarrenx), Bunheng (14th century, census), Bunienh (1546, Reformation des Béarn), Bugneng and Buneinh (1608 and 1612, respectively, incorporated into the Diocese of Oloron ). Great war damage was recorded during the Huguenot Wars . The local church was set on fire by Protestant troops under Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery. The municipality is entered under its current name on the map of Cassini in 1750.

Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The parish church is dedicated to John the Baptist . After the original church was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars, it was rebuilt in the 17th century. Its floor plan consists of a nave with a short transept , finished with a semicircular apse . During the reconstruction, the donjon of the former Bugnein castle was reused and integrated as a bell tower.

Altar and altarpiece from the 17th century inside the church are characteristic furnishings in the Baroque style. The tower behind the altar takes up the entire wall of the apse. The large central oil painting shows the Lamentation of Christ . On the left of the picture there is a statue of St. Paul on the side , on the right one of St. Peter . The upper part of the altarpiece is decorated with a tympanum with a statuette of the patron saint . Baroque volutes and winding columns can be seen on the tabernacle . On the door of the tabernacle, a relief shows Jesus with a globe with a cross in his left hand, a symbol of world domination. In the upper part of the tabernacle, a relief shows Christ crucified , flanked on both sides by a relief depicting the Annunciation of the Lord .

In the left side chapel, the gaze falls on a sculpture on the top of a stepped marble altarpiece . It contains relics of the holy ridge, the first bishop of the Oloron diocese , born in Lichos in the 5th century . During the Huguenot Wars, his relics were brought to Jaca in Aragon and returned to Bugnein in 1621. The bishop Joseph de Revol rediscovered it in 1710 and it was decided to properly keep it in a reliquary. This is a bust with a skin-colored face and dressed in a chasuble and miter .
