The 1385 census of Béarn counted 20 households in Orin and the village was part of the Bailliage of Oloron . The basic rule was the bishops of Oloron, because Orin was part of the Barony of Moumour that was under the leadership of the diocese. There was a lay monastery , Vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, first mentioned in the records in 1365 and divided in 1385. From 1775 until the French Revolution , the lay monastery was last owned by the Navailles-Mirepeix family.

Toponyms and mentions of Orin were:

Attractions

Parish church of Saint-Martin and a former lay monastery
Entrance to the porch of the parish church
  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . First mentioned in 1335, it was originally a private chapel . The porch from 1706 shows sculptures of enigmatic fighters. The bell tower with a tent roof on its helmet was renewed in 1863 after a fire. The nave is closed by an apse with an apse dome . The main and side aisles are separated by a pointed arch arcade , a side chapel and the choir are separated by a thick wall. The northern part of the church is located in the park of the adjacent lay monastery . Today there is a walled-up passage from the parish church to the chapel of the lay monastery, which suggests that renovation work was carried out in 1706. On the tabernacle of the altarpiece in the church choir is a statue of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus. A canopy with a shell-shaped underside arches over it . A closed royal crown is placed on top of it, with a statuette of St. Martin enthroned on top . This presumably replaced a statuette depicting the risen Christ, which corresponds to a more common iconography . The door of the tabernacle illustrates the scene of the mocking of Christ with a blessing God the Father above and Saints Peter and Paul on either side. The wings of the tabernacle are decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the Annunciation and framed by serpent columns. Four putti play in the foliage on the side volutes . The altarpiece has been classified as a monument historique since 1963 .
  • Lay monastery. The large, L-shaped building has three floors. The square, four-story tower in the corner is covered with a tent roof and probably dates from the 15th century. The walls of the monastery are made of pebbles arranged in a fern leaf pattern, and the corners of the house are accentuated by slabs of limestone. The main facade has five twin windows , while the north facade was reworked in the 18th century.
