Arrast-Larrebieu is a French municipality with 95 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Montagne Basque (until 2015: canton of Mauléon-Licharre ).

The inhabitants are called Urrustoitars . The name in the Basque language is Ürüstoi-Larrabile .

Arrast-Larrebieu is located about 30 kilometers northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historical region of Soule , one of the three historical territories in the French part of the Basque Country .

history

The place Arrast is already in the 13th century with the same name in the cartulary of Bayonne mentioned. Paul Raymond noted the mention of Larrebieu under the name Larrebiu in 1384 by a notary from Navarrenx .

In the 14th century it is mentioned that the parish has a lay monastery in connection with the Viscount of Soule. On October 16, 1842, the communities of Arrast and Larrebieu merged to form today's commune.

The number of inhabitants has continuously decreased from 323 in the year when the former municipalities of Arrast were merged with Larrebieu to below 100.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Lucia of Syracuse . At the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, parts of the previous church were rebuilt. The bell gable is a typical example of the Soule region with its characteristic clocher trinitaire . The gable has three pointed roofs, each with a cross, symbolizing the Trinity .
  • Larrebieu Chapel. With the merger of the two parishes in 1842, the church in Arrast became a local church and the former church in Larrebieu became a chapel. With its bell gable and the slate-covered canopy at the entrance, it shows two of the typical elements of church architecture for the region.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture and handicrafts are important economic factors in the area. A cabinet maker and an upholsterer have their business in the community.

Arrast-Larrebieu is in the AOC areas of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
