A lay monastery , a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, a blacksmith and a community of Cagots , a group of people who were discriminated against and largely excluded from social life in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century, for reasons still unknown today, have survived . The village has long been crossed by a branch route of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . For this reason there was a hospital for the reception and care of pilgrims , which no longer exists today. The geographical location between Pau and Bayonne prompted the notables of these cities to build numerous town houses in Rivehaute between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Toponyms and mentions of Rivehaute were:

Attractions

Parish church de l'Assomption-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie
  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . It was built between 1860 and 1864 to replace an earlier church that was considered too small and outdated and which has now been converted into a barn. The entrance to today's parish church is through an entrance porch, which is reached via a staircase with five steps. The entrance portal in the form of a pointed arch is kept in the neo-Gothic style. Two columns with capitals adorned with flowers support the archivolts of the portal. The bell tower rises above the entrance porch . At the height of its second level, a rose window breaks through the facade. It consists of a circular segment around which six smaller oculi are distributed. These small windows show motifs of yellow flowers against a red background. The central window shows the bust of God the Father from the front . He raises his right hand to bless those who believe. The left hand rests on a globe as a sign of omnipotence on earth. Between the second and third levels of the bell tower, a tower clock shows passers-by the time. On the top level, the tower has sound openings of the bell chamber in the form of twin windows on all four sides . The bell tower is equipped with a polygonal , slate- covered helmet and roof turrets on all four outer corners. These are pyramidal and show irises at their tips. The interior of the church is in neo-Gothic style with a ribbed vault supported by pillars and columns with ornate capitals. The thrust is absorbed by several buttresses along the outer walls. The single nave nave is flanked by two side chapels that form a transept. Around 1864 twelve stained glass windows with depictions of religious personalities and decorative motifs were installed, works by Mauméjean stained glass from Pau. Three of these windows embellish the choir , two the transept and six the nave. The twelfth window is the rose window in the bell tower. The shape of the windows is adapted to the pointed arches of the wall openings. The windows of the choir, for example, are 3 m high and 80 cm wide. Each shows an image of a saint , the apostle Peter , Louis IX. of France and Anthony of Padua . The windows in the transept show Mary and Joseph . Although the people can be recognized by their attributes , their names are given below. Geometric motifs have been incorporated into the windows in the nave.
  • Lay monastery, called l'Hespitau . The building was probably built in the 15th or 16th century and changed and restored over the centuries. The rectangular residential building consists of two floors with cross- floor windows on the upper floor. The numerous doors on the ground floor are more recent. The construction of the polygonal tower, which was added to the facade, was very common in the 19th century. The outbuildings, together with the main house, form an inner courtyard, the access to which is closed from the outside by a wrought iron grille . This has been made relatively recently and shows a traditional work with integrated round, entwined and recurring motifs such as hearts, irises and the letter "C".
  • Larramée Castle. It belonged to the Casamajor family from Gestas from the end of the 15th century until 1847. Subsequently, Bachoué, Count von Barraute, inherited the property. He kept it until the middle of the 19th century when it went to a cousin of the Bachoué-Barraute family. The castle consists of a two-storey residential building five bays wide , framed by two square towers. The roofs of the towers and the main building are covered with slate and show an interplay of the different roof shapes. The residential building has a roof with a ridge along the building line, the roofs of the towers are pointed with a ridge across the building line. At the junctures of the three parts of the building, chimneys tower up with curved screens and spheres at each corner of their tips. Three hatches let light into the attic floors. Their gables are decorated with eyelashes and pegs . Remains of a curved gable made of yellowish sandstone can be seen above the entrance door on the north side , which was probably attached in the course of the 17th century.
