history

The center of the municipality has developed on a ridge . Because of this favorable geographical location, the place was probably settled as early as the Gallo-Roman period , as the remains of a fortified camp suggest. In the Middle Ages, the settlement was of medium size, but with a noble seat, which explains the houses of serfs in the village. The village was not far from the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . In the 13th century was Pilgerherberge the Commandery of the monastery of Roncesvalles mentioned in the town that the pilgrims took up and used. This building was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 17 households were counted in Burgaronne and it was noted that the municipality is in the Bailliage of Sauveterre-de-Béarn. During the Second World War , the German Wehrmacht used the exposed geographic location for an anti-aircraft base .

In the records, Burgaronne was mentioned in the following forms: Burgarone (1235, manuscript collection des Béarn), Burgarona (1323, documents of the Vicomté des Béarn), Bulgarona and Burguarone (1548 and 1614, respectively, manuscript collection des Béarn) and Saint-Étienne de Burguerone (1656, incorporated into the Diocese of Oloron ). On the map of Cassini 1750, Burgaronne is drawn as Burguaronne , and was used under its current name during the French Revolution in 1793.

Population development

After a temporary high of 224 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell in various waves by around 80% until the 1960s. It has more than doubled since then and is expected to continue to rise.
