Helcogramma is a genus of small marine fish from the family of three-fin slime fish(Tripterygiidae). All species of this genus occur in the western Pacific , the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea . Like all three-fin slime fish, they are bottom-dwelling, very hidden fish.
features
Diagnostic features with which the genus Helcogramma can be distinguished from other genera of the three-fin slime fish are the continuous side line that begins above the gill cover and then runs in an arc downwards along the middle of the body. It consists of 7 to 39 scales with tubular pores. Other characteristics of Helcogramma are the scaly head, a scaly stripe at the base of the dorsal and anal fin, three spiked rays in the first dorsal fin and one in the anal fin and ventral fins, which are supported by a spine and two soft rays. There are five hypuralia in the caudal fin skeleton .
species
The genus Helcogramma includes over 40 species. After Enneapterygius, it is the second most species-rich genus of the three-fin slime fish.
