Helcogramma atauroensis is a small marine fish from the family of three-fin slime fish(Tripterygiidae). The first description took place in 2017. The fish is named after the East Timorese island of Atauro . "Red-anal Triplefin" was proposedas an English common name .

discovery

The first description was based on eight specimens that were caught on the northwest coast of Atauros in front of the town of Vatuo , in three meters depth of a shallow coral reef .

description

Helcogramma atauroensis belongs to the Helcogramma steinitzi species group, which can be diagnosed by the fact that the first dorsal fin, supported by three spine rays, begins above the preoperculum . In all other Helcogramma species, it begins well behind the preoperculum. The second dorsal fin has 14 to 15 spiny rays, the third has nine to eleven soft rays. Of a total of nine to eleven sensory pores on the lower jaw, one is found on the symphysis . The sideline is formed from 19 to 23 scales provided with tubular pores. It begins above the gill cover and extends to the end of the second dorsal fin or the attachment of the third dorsal fin. The head profile rises at an angle of about 70 ° from the horizontal. All scales are comb scales . The neck is flaky.

The basic color of the fish is light green. They are translucent and the spine can be seen. Males show four short brown transverse bands on their backs, there are nine in females, and some can be double. On the sides of the body there are rows of brown spots, with whitish or light yellow spots between them. The top of the head is bright blue and patterned with red-brown lines. The first and second dorsal fin is transparent in the females, the fin rays are reddish. In the males, each dorsal fin ray has a dark spot at the base and the fin membranes are patterned with small black dots. The third dorsal fin is transparent, with small black dots in the males. The anal fin is colored red in the male, translucent in the female and shows six oblique, red-brown lines. The pelvic fins are black in the male and silvery white in the female. The pectoral fins are transparent, the base of their central fin rays is silvery white. The caudal fin is translucent, its central fin rays are red-brown.

The largest specimen found had a body length of 31.6 mm.
