history
Asasp is first mentioned in 1364 as asap in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts from the Vice- County of Béarn. In 1385, 17 households are counted in a census and it is noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Oloron.
Arros for the first time in the 12th century in the cartulary of Gabas mentioned. In the census of 1385 7 households were counted and it was noted that the settlement is in the Bailliage of Oloron. At that time there was a lay monastery depending on the Vice Count of Béarn.
The Roman road that connected today's Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Spain across the Pyrenees passed the two villages and crossed the Gave d'Aspe at Asasp, which was the only option outside of Oloron. A wooden footbridge made this possible for pedestrians until 1494, horses and carts had to get through the water via a ford to the other bank. Oloron resisted building a bridge between Asasp and Lurbe for a long time, because then the streams of merchants and pilgrims would no longer necessarily pass over Oloron, but only remain on the left bank over the then rival Sainte-Marie. After the bridge was built, Asasp and Arros saw each other on a branch line of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela , which increased the importance and prosperity.
In 1956 it was decided to change the name of Arros to "Arros d'Oloron" to avoid confusion with Arros-de-Nay . On January 1, 1973, the two municipalities merged.
Population development
After a peak of over 700 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number had decreased by almost half by the time the municipalities merged. In addition to the 106 inhabitants of Arros at the time of the merger, the number rose until 1990, when in the following years it fell back to roughly the 1968 level.

Attractions
- Church Saint-Vincent-Diacre in the district Arros dedicated Vincent de Valencia . Possibly built on Romanesque foundations, today's building was extensively restored towards the end of the 19th century, so that conclusions about the original appearance are difficult. The interior is made of painted and gilded wood with coastal motifs such as lighthouses and sailing ships. The wooden ceiling is designed in the form of an inverted ship floor, which was painted in 1778 by the painter Jérôme Ribère from Oloron.
- Church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste in the Asasp district, dedicated to the Apostle John , built in the 17th century, heavily restored in the 19th century. It has the traditional plan of a church in the Béarn with a bell tower above the entrance, a nave with two side chapels and a flat apse . In the interior on the wall of the apse there is a remarkable altarpiece from the 18th century with gilded decoration.
Economy and Infrastructure
Tourism is an important economic factor, even if agriculture still has a certain importance. Hiking trails lead through the wooded area. The geographical location on several rivers and streams and their water quality allows fish farming. A hydroelectric power station was built at the confluence of the Gave d'Aspe and Gave de Lourdios.
Asasp-Arros is located in the AOC zone of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made cheese made from sheep's milk.
