history

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the first mention of Arros-de-Nay as Arrosium in the year 1100 in the copy book of Mifaget , in the 12th century in Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn in the forms Arrode and Rode . A census in 1385 counted 44 households and noted that the place is in the Bailliage of Pau. Arros and Bosdarros (Arros Forest) formed the seventh of the twelve baronates of the Béarn. In 1549 there were 46 households.

Bernard d'Arros sided with Jeanne d'Albret , Queen of Navarre , when she converted to Protestantism in the 16th century . As captain of their army, he was involved in 1569 to defend the citadel of Navarrenx , which was besieged by opposing troops , until a Protestant relief army arrived. The Queen herself was in Navarennx at the time.

The family name disappeared when the granddaughter of Bernard d'Arros married Pierre de Gontaut-Biron in 1589. This family lost their title to the Espalungue family in 1671, who held it until the French Revolution .

In 1932, the prefect of the department decided to add the name of the headquarters of the canton at that time, Nay , to the place name in order to avoid confusion with the municipality of Arros, now Asasp-Arros , in the district of Oloron-Sainte-Marie .

  • Church Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur , dedicated to James the Elder . The original church was in the castle park. The current church was built on a different site in 1835 at a time when France was experiencing a wave of building or rebuilding of places of worship. In 1863 the furnishings of today's church were completed and glass windows were incorporated around 1900 and 1958 . In the choir of the three-aisled church building there are two paintings that depict Jesus' Last Supper and the Descent from the Cross . These are works by the local artist Léon Subercaze from the 19th century.
  • Castle of Arros. The castle is located in the middle of a park through which the Luz flows. The main wing dates from the 16th century. It is flanked by two side wings, one from the 18th century, framed by two small towers on the remains of the first castle and one from the 18th century closed with another tower. The three-storey main building is made of stones from the local quarry and is covered by a high, steeply sloping slate roof. The dovecote is in the courtyard . The possession of such a building was generally an outward sign of the privileges of a feudal lord. This dovecote is the largest in the Béarn with a diameter of 8 m and more than 880 nesting holes. The number of nest holes always represented the size of the property.
  • Source of the fairies. Numerous villages in the Béarn preserve “miraculous springs” whose water, according to popular belief, has healing powers. The miracle spring of Arros-de-Nay is called the "spring of the fairies" and is known as a remedy for whooping cough . The time when the circular stone pool was built has been forgotten over time.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main focus of Arros-de-Nay's economy is the trade and services sector.

However, the traditional agricultural sector is still represented. Arros-de-Nay is in the AOC zone of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made cheese made from sheep's milk.
