Corbère-Abères is a French municipality with 108 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton of Lembeye ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Corbèras-Avera .

Corbère-Abères is located about 40 kilometers northeast of Pau in the Vic-Bilh region in the historic province of Béarn on the northeastern edge of the department.

Corbère-Abères lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River . The Larcis , a tributary of the Lées , marks the eastern border with the neighboring municipality of Moncaup. The Ruisseau du Boscq flows into the Larcis in the municipality.

history

The municipalities of Corbère and Abères près Corbère merged between 1801 and 1806 to form the municipality of Corbère-Abères. In 1833 the previous municipality of Domengeux was added, initially under the name Corbère-Abères-Domengeux.

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the registration of eight households each in Corbère and Domengeux in the census of 1385 and the affiliation of both communities to the Bailliage of Lembeye . The Baronate of Corbère was a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, Domengeux was dependent on the Commandery of the Order of St. John of Caubin and Morlaàs .

Population development

After the highest number of inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century of almost 400 inhabitants, the number fell by a total of around 80% during brief phases of growth to less than 100 inhabitants by the turn of the millennium, but has increased again since then. The decrease was particularly significant between 1841 and 1872 (around 36%).

Attractions

  • Local church of Corbère, dedicated to Orientius , Bishop of Augusta Ausciorum in the 5th century. The origin of the church goes back to the 12th century. It was restored around 1820 and again around 1870. The single-nave nave is closed off to the east with a flat apse and to the west with a bell tower as a porch of the entrance. In the second half of the 19th century, stained glass windows were used by the Mauméjean stained glass company, which is well known in the region . Other furnishings in the church date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets. The bell was cast from bronze in 1783 , its height is 44 cm, its diameter 55.5 cm, the clapper is made of iron and the crown is made of wood. It is signed with "Ebrard me fecit 1783" ( German  Ebrard created me 1783 ). The foundryman Ebrard created other bells in the region.
  • Castle of Corbère-Abères. In a document from 1684 the construction of the castle is mentioned. At that time it was the seat of the Baronate of Corbère, which also included the neighboring town of Abères. In the second half of the 18th century, the facility was rebuilt by Jean-Paul d'Angosse, in particular a large staircase on the eastern tower and a dovecote were added in this course. In the 1930s, famous personalities such as French fashion designer and entrepreneur Coco Chanel owned the castle, while French film director Robert Bresson bought one of the outbuildings. The remains of a moth and an inner courtyard can be seen in the castle park, which later became the seat of the landlord and the lay monastery .

Agriculture is still the most important economic factor today. Mainly maize is grown here, the main focus of livestock farming is the rearing of cattle, calves and geese.
