history

Ancient mosaics that were found in the municipality show that there was a settlement as early as Gallo-Roman times . The village was first mentioned in the scriptures in 1371. The 1385 census of the Béarn counted twelve households in Saint-Armou. The landlord was under the Baronate of Navailles . He owned a water mill above the Luy de France, where the farmers had to grind their grain. With the French Revolution and the loss of this privilege, the Saint-Armouais built their own mill.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Laurent
  • Parish church dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . The nave of the church, built in the 14th century, with a main aisle and two side aisles, is closed off by a five-walled apse . At the other end of the building, the church has a bell tower with two bells from 1730 and 1851. Towards the end of the 18th century, the building was enlarged and restored, as evidenced by the year "1789" on the keystone above the southern entrance. Another renovation took place in the 19th century. The sarcophagus-shaped altar is made of white and gray marble and dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is bevelled and its sides offer space for sideboards . The tabernacle , probably from the late 17th century, illustrated in a relief Jesus as Ecce homo . Statuettes dating from the first half of the 18th century and possibly originally belonging to another altarpiece flank the tabernacle. A bishop is depicted to the left of the shrine , to the right an evidently saint holding a book, Peter on the left wing and Paul on the right wing . There is a tabor on the tabernacle . Other furnishings in the church date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
