The discovery of five barrows in the area of the municipality testifies to an early settlement. In ancient times , a road led from Atura ( Aire-sur-l'Adour ) to Beneharnum ( Lescar ). The landlord of Doumy was first mentioned in 1096 on the occasion of the convocation of the Viscount of Béarn and the twelve most important landlords by the Duke of Gascony to swear the protection of the Abbey of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre . Another document shows that in 1154 the barons of Doumy and Gerderest, at the head of a delegation of 120 Bearners in Canfranc, swore an oath of allegiance to the King of Aragon, Raymond Berengar IV . The 1385 census counted 21 households in Doumy and recorded their membership in the Bailliage of Pau. Together with today's neighboring parish of Bournos, Doumy formed the ninth largest baronate of Béarn. In today's district of Saint-Peyrus there was a lay monastery , vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.

Toponyms and mentions of Doumy were:

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to the Archangel Michael . It was built in the 11th or 12th centuries and has retained some elements of Romanesque architecture to this day. The entrance portal and the aisle date from the 16th century, the bell tower from the 17th century. In 1846 a renovation took place. Furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Chapel Sainte-Quitterie , dedicated to Saint Quiteria. There are several legends about the life of the patron saint. The Visigoth king's daughter is said to have been born in Toledo in the 5th century and fled her parents' house when her father tried to marry her against her will. She had crossed the Pyrenees when her pursuers reportedly cut off an arm in Lescar. On May 22, 478, she is said to have lost her other arm in Doumy. Since then, this date has been a day of remembrance and the chapel is still the destination of a pilgrimage on this day. In the forest on the border with the neighboring community of Sauvignon, it was possibly built between the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of an earlier Roman cult site.
  • Doumy Castle. The original castle was probably built on a mound in the 11th century and was the aristocratic seat of the first landlords and barons of the community. The artificial earthfill can still be seen in today's palace gardens under bushes and flowers. Its height is 4 m and the area of the platform is 4 to 5 m in diameter. The castle was built at the beginning of the 18th century. Its architecture is characterized by neo-Gothic portholes and a splendid interior with wood paneling and chimneys. From 1725 until the eve of the French Revolution, the castle was owned by the Courrège family. Between 1923 and 1930, the owner was Étienne Balsan , an industrialist who was in a relationship with Coco Chanel at the beginning of the 20th century .
