A Romanesque church and a hall cross were built in the community in the 11th century. Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to St. Julien I, the first bishop of Lescar . He Christianized the area around the oppidum Beneharnum in the 5th century , from which the community of Lescar later developed. The church was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style. At the end of the 16th century, the aisle and the sacristy were added. The year 1830, which is engraved above the entrance portal , indicates a restoration during this time, during which the bell gable typical of the region was built. Many of the church's furnishings date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Archaeological site of the Gallo-Roman villa. The discovery of the villa was officially presented in a magazine on September 13, 1843, and the excavation site was uncovered towards the end of the 19th century. An extensive archaeological investigation takes place between 1959 and 1972 under the direction of the archaeologist Jean Lauffray. In 1967 and 1968 66 coins with various portraits of Roman emperors were recovered, and a year later 46 coins from the time of Constantine the Great were seized. Another phase of the investigation took place between 1994 and 2005 by the archaeological research group of the University of Pau , through which further knowledge could be gained about the function of the estate, construction progress and way of life. The villa was inhabited from the beginning of our Common Era to the 5th century, with the living area probably extending over two hectares. It was a center of agriculture and animal husbandry not far from the Roman road from Burdigala ( Bordeaux ) to Caesaraugusta ( Saragossa ), which leads to the assumption that people passing through may also have stayed there. It is believed that in the second century the buildings resulted in an extensive residential complex around a large inner courtyard. With the 4th century the need for embellishments in the form of mosaics grew . In the Middle Ages , the location lost its function as the residence of rich or noble people. The identification of a cemetery field with around 40 graves and a small building with a square apse leads to the conclusion that the place then only had a religious function. Artifacts from the excavation site are exhibited in the Gallo-Roman Museum in the neighboring community of Claracq.
  • Dovecote from Lalonquette. Owning a dovecote separate from the residential building was a privilege of the landlord during the Ancien Régimes and its size was proportional to the importance of the owner. The original construction of this dovecote in Lalonquette, which is now privately owned, probably dates from the 17th century. It stands on a square floor plan and has a tent roof covered with flat tiles .
