Baleix lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . One of its tributaries, called the Grand Lées here in the upper reaches , crosses the municipality, as does one of its tributaries, the Petit Lées . The Ruisseau de Pédebosc, a tributary of the "small" Lées, also flows through the town.

history

Baleix was mentioned as Bales in the copy book of Lescar as early as the 11th century , in the 12th century as Balas in Pierre de Marcas book Histoire de Béarn , in the 13th century as Balestoos in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts of the vice-county of Bearn. The 1385 census counted 22 households in Baleixs and it was noted that the settlement is in the Bailliage of Pau. Further forms of the place name in the scriptures were subsequently: Balesie (census, 1402), Baleyxs and Balechs (1538), Balex ( Reformation of Béarn, 1548). The municipality is entered as Baleix on the map of Cassini in 1750 .

Traces of two fortified camps, called Castet Mayou and Turocq de Naudy , prove an early settlement. 1096 the texts mention the liege lord Ramon Esius de Ballier, who also owned a lay monastery . Throughout the Middle Ages , the village was dependent on the powerful Commandery of the Order of St. John of Caubin and Morlaàs . In 1382 the village was set on fire by Jean II , Count of Armagnac's troops . As can be seen from the results of the census three years later, the village was quickly rebuilt.

Population development

After the peak of 451 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number had dropped to about a quarter of the maximum by the end of the 20th century. Since then the population has been increasing again.
