Jurançon is a French commune in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Pau and was the capital of the canton of Jurançon until 2015 . Since then it has belonged to the canton of Billère et Coteaux de Jurançon . Jurançon has 7,094 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The inhabitants are called Jurançonnais.
geography
Jurançon borders Pau to the southwest and lies on the Nez River at an altitude of between 159 and 356 m above sea level. The municipality covers 18.78 km² (1,878 ha) and the population density is 393 people per km². Neighboring municipalities are Gelos , Billère , Pau, and Bizanos .
history
Jurançon was founded in 1117 as the fortress of Morlàas. However, the area was already settled in the Neolithic, as evidenced by relevant finds, e.g. B. a stone ax was found.
