history
The discovery of a fortified camp in the area of the municipality proves an early settlement in the prehistory . In the Middle Ages the community developed with the establishment of a manorial rule , which was first mentioned in the 14th century. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 22 households were counted and it was noted that the village belongs to the Bailliage of Lembeye . A certain importance at this time is evidenced by the existence of two blacksmiths and a pastor. The manorial rule went to François de Navarro in the 16th century, who from then on shared it with the Viscount of Béarn, then to the Lalande family, Théophile de Gayon and in the 17th century to the renowned de Gassion family.
Toponyms and mentions of Gayon were:
- Caioo (1383, contracts of the notary Luntz),
- Gayoo (1385, census in the Béarn) and
- Gayon (1750, map by Cassini ).
Population development
After the population peaked at over 300 in the first half of the 19th century, the number has fallen by over 80% with short periods of growth until today, and this negative trend continues.

Attractions
- Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . It was built in 1901 according to plans by the architects Gabarret et Noustary, with the western wall of the church and the walls of the nave coming from an earlier church. The long building covered with slate houses a nave and has a bell gable , typical for churches in the region. Inside the church, the ceiling is provided with a ribbed vault . The stained glass windows date from the first half of the 20th century and are the work of the glass painters Henri and Louis Gesta from Toulouse . Many of the church's furnishings date from the 18th to 20th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets. On the tabernacle of the side altar there is a status of Mary, her hands folded in prayer and her eyes fixed on the sky. She wears her traditional clothes, a long white dress and a blue shawl, as shown in a painting on the wall of the church. In this motif she floats in heaven, surrounded by angels .
- Gayon Castle. It was built by the local landlords in the 13th or 14th century to the east of a medieval mound castle. The house was largely rebuilt in the 16th century, in the course of which twin windows were used in the style of the time. A century later, a square tower was added to the residential wing. The interior dates from the end of the 18th century, extensive restorations were carried out in 1866. The only remnant of the original structure is a round tower in the western part, on which two arched notches can still be seen today . On the map by Cassini from 1750, the castle can be seen east of the town center.
- Lauga building. The noble Lauga family gave the building its name, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century, as indicated by the year 1607 on the lintel above the fireplace on the ground floor.
