Castetner ( Occitan Castèthner ) is a French municipality with 134 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: canton of Lagor ).

The inhabitants are called Castetnerois or Castetneroises in French . The name in the Gascognischen language is Castèth Ner .

Castetner is about 50 km northwest of Pau and about 10 km southeast of Orthez in the historic province of Béarn .

Castetner is located in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River . The Ruisseau de Géu Mort, a tributary of the Gave de Pau and the Arrieusec, a tributary of the Laâ , flow through the municipality. In addition, the Arriou de Barran rises on the territory of the municipality.

history

Castetner lies on a militarily interesting location on a ridge above the valleys of the Gave de Pau and the Laâ. In the area of ​​today's municipality there was a Roman military camp , from which the municipality got its name and from which the settlement developed over the centuries.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Castetner was the seat of a notary's office . In the 1385 census in Béarn, 33 households were recorded in Casteg-ner . Further toponyms and mentions of Castetner were subsequently Castetne and Castegnee (1538 and 1568, respectively, manuscript from the 16th to 18th centuries). The community knows three old quarters, En-Haut , Enceinte and En-Bas . The former was mentioned in manuscripts in 1545 as le toron aperat lo Casteg de Castegner . Castetner flourished in the 16th century as the main town in the Bailliage of Larbaig.

Between 1972 and 1979 Castetner was part of the Maslacq municipality .

Population development

After a peak of 340 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the population of the municipality fell by a total of around two thirds with short growth phases up to the 1960s. Since then, there has been a certain stabilization of the population around 150.

  • Local church, dedicated to Maria Magdalena . During the Huguenot Wars , Castetner sided with the Protestant side and the church at that time became Protestant. After the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685 it was demolished and the parish had no church for almost a century. In 1781 the new church was built, the architecture of which differs in certain points from that of other churches in the region. The church in Castetner is a low stone building with a roof with a slight slope. The bell gable is covered with a canopy. The church's tabernacle dates from the 17th century and is registered as a national treasure. The special thing about it is its double opening.
