Boumourt is a French municipality with 158 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Artix et Pays de Soubestre (until 2015: canton of Arthez-de-Béarn ).

The residents are called Boumourtais or Boumourtaises .

history

The name of the municipality first appeared in the 12th century in the forms Bolmort and Bomort according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , in the same century in the copial book of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde as Bulmor , in the 13th century as Boeumort in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts from the Vice-County of Béarn. In the census of 1385, 26 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Pau. Further forms of the place name in the scriptures were subsequently Boomort (1505, notaries from Garos) and Boumort (1572, deeds from Cassaber ).

Since the first mention in the 12th century, several high-ranking landlords resided in Boumourt, who were present at the court of Béarn, e. B. Sans-Aner de Bomort that in the construction of the Cathedral of Lescar was involved. In the 17th century, the de Salinis family appeared, whose fief allowed them to join the Béarn estates .

Population development

After the population peaked at the beginning of the 19th century with 284 inhabitants in the 1846 census, the rural exodus began and steadily reduced the number to around a third by the 1980s. Since then, the number of residents in the community has increased by around 50% to this day.

Attractions

  • Church dedicated to Mary Magdalene . From 1888 to 1891 the church was built on the site of the former church, the condition of which was considered too dangerous. Many elements of sacred architecture that were in vogue at the end of the 19th century are visible in this church, including a. the polygonal top of the bell tower above the entrance, the groin vault and the style of the eight stained glass windows , works by Mauméjean stained glass from 1889.
  • Boumourt School. The municipality had a larger number of inhabitants in the 19th century than today. A school was built in 1864 for the children of the community and those of the neighboring village of Arnos, and in 1885 it was even expanded.
