history

The municipality of Saint-Laurent-Bretagne was created after the merger of the municipalities of Saint-Laurent and Bretagne on October 16, 1842.

The area of the municipality has been populated since the Gallo-Roman times , as archaeological finds show. The former municipality of Brittany is crossed by an ancient road, an old pilgrimage route . The two villages were first mentioned on the occasion of the census in 1385. Seven houses were counted in Saint-Laurent and six in Brittany. Both villages belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. They were subordinate to two different landlords , these in turn the Baron von Gerderest . Saint-Laurent, Brittany and Gabaston made up a parish that was part of the Archdeaconate of Vic-Bilh, which was under the diocese of Lescar . There was a lay monastery in Brittany mentioned in a listing by Jacques de Latapie in 1674. In 1691 the landlord of Saint-Laurent married the daughter of the musketeer Henri d'Aramitz. The titleholders of Brittany came from the Latapie family from Morlaàs in the 18th century .
