Artigueloutan is a French commune with 1,090 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: Canton Pau-Est ).
The inhabitants are called Artigueloutanais or Artigueloutanaises .

Artigueloutan is located in the Adours catchment area and is crossed by the Ousse and Ousse des Bois , both tributaries of the Gave de Pau .
history
Prehistoric finds prove an early existence of humans in the water-rich area. Barrows preserved evidence in the form of tools and ceramics. Three fortified camps prove the settlement in ancient times .
Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the mention of the settlement under the name Artigueloptaa in 1385 on the occasion of a census in which 28 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Pau. Other forms of the place name in writings of the 14th century were Artigalopta and Artigelobtaa . Until the end of the feudal system through the French Revolution , the local area was divided into two fiefdoms, one owned by the king, which was administered by a magistrate in Pau, and a local fiefdom.
Population development
After an initial peak of over 700 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number had decreased by more than half by the middle of the 20th century. Due to the proximity to Pau, the number developed in the following years with a strong increase of more than threefold.

Attractions
- The local church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste , dedicated to John the Baptist , has a simple main facade and was built around 1850. The choir is embellished by a painting by the painter Butay from the 17th or 18th century. It shows the crucifixion of Jesus with Mary on the left, recognizable by the traditional blue cloak and a bishop on the right, recognizable by his miter and his wide red cloak.

Artigueloutan is located in the AOC zone of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk.

Artigueloutan is crossed by Routes départementales 213, 215 and 817, the former Route nationale 117 . The place is connected to Pau by a regular transport and call line service .
The Henri IV path leads along the south-western border to the neighboring communities. It is a hiking trail that connects the Castle of Franqueville in Bizanos with the Lake of Lourdes . The 35 km long route can be completed on foot, by horse or bike.
