history

The name Sauvelade is derived from the Latin term silva lata (large forest). The Sauvelade Monastery was founded by Benedictine monks in 1127 after the land was donated to them by Count Gaston IV of Béarn . Initially (before 1286) the abbey was named Saint-Jacques to show that it served to protect the pilgrims of St. James . From 1286 the monastery was continued by the Cistercians . In 1569 , during the Wars of Religion , the monastery was devastated by Protestant troops led by Count Montgomery . In 1630 the area becomes Roman Catholic again in the course of the Counter Reformation . During the French Revolution , the monks were finally evicted and the abbey was sold as national property.

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )

The Sauvelade Abbey has looked after the passing pilgrims since the 12th century . Even today there is a pilgrims' hostel (French: Gîte d'étape ) and a restaurant in the monastery complex . In addition, the place offers some private rooms (French: Chambre d'hôtes ). The further path leads through the hills of the foothills of the Pyrenees . Streams cross again and again, which leads to a constant up and down before the town of Navarrenx is reached. Route D110, D111 leads to Navarrenx as a road connection.

Culture and economy

Apse of the abbey church
  • In Sauvelade there are the typical Béarn farms, in which the farm buildings are arranged around a central courtyard.
  • The 13th century church belonging to the abbey is kept simple and simple in the style of the Cistercians . However, it has a rare floor plan in the form of a Greek cross . Inside there are Corinthian columns with Gallo-Roman inscriptions.

A large part of the population works in agriculture and livestock. Mainly corn is grown. The place is located in the area of the protected designation of origin ( Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC)) of Béarn.
