Saint-Côme-d'Olt on the Lot

Saint-Côme-d'Olt is a French commune with 1,349 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Occitanie region in the Aveyron department . The long-distance hiking trail GR 65 leads through the village , which largely follows the historical course of the French Way of St. James, Via Podiensis .

The association Les plus beaux villages de France has declared Saint-Côme-d'Olt one of the most beautiful villages in France .

Geography and traffic

Saint-Côme-d'Olt is located in the southern part of the Massif Central on the banks of the Lot , just downstream of the confluence of its right tributary, Boralde de Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac .

The nearest major cities are Lyon in the northeast (210 km), Toulouse in the southwest (149 km), Bordeaux in the west (272 km) and Montpellier in the southeast (131 km).

The nearest airport is Rodez-Aveyron , which is served by Air France and Ryanair , among others . It is about 43 kilometers away via the D988 or D27. The next train station is also in Rodez . In Saint-Côme-d'Olt, the D6, which runs in the Lot Valley, meets the D987, which comes from the Aubrac plateau into the Lottal Valley.

history

The original settlement was around a Romanesque chapel from the 10th century. This chapel is empty today, but for a long time it served as the seat of the brotherhood of the "White Penitents" (French: Pénitents blancs ).
In 1528 Saint-Côme-d'Olt received city rights from the Baron of Calmont d'Olt.
In 1586 around 2400 people died of the plague, which was raging at the time. The place was first repopulated by residents of the old province of Quercy .

At the time of the French Revolution , the municipality was called Montagne-sur-Lot .

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )

In Saint-Côme-d'Olt there are hotels and restaurants as well as several pilgrimage hostels (French: Gîte d'étape ) in addition to the tourist information office . The place also has a campsite. The Way of St. James continues down the perpendicular to Espalion . The D556 leads there as a secondary road or the D987 as the main road .

Parish Church of Saint-Côme
  • Parish church of Saint-Côme (16th century) with an interesting bell tower. The construction was commissioned by the Bishop of Angoulême and Prior of Saint-Côme-d'Olt, Antoine d'Estaing. Antoine Salvanh, who also designed the cathedral of Rodez , was commissioned as the builder .
  • Penitent Chapel . Originally a hospice for pilgrims, it was restored by the brotherhood of the "White Penitents" in the 18th century. Today it serves as an exhibition center.
  • Old town with houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. This part of the village, which has remained almost unchanged and intact for almost 600 years, is entered through one of the three city gates.
