Notre-Dame church

Thérondels ( Occitan : Terondèls ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 406 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aveyron department in the Occitania region . The place belongs to the former county of Carladès in the historical province of Rouergue .

location

Thérondels is the northernmost municipality in the Aveyron department. It lies at an altitude of approx. 950 m above sea level. d. M. and about 500 m east of the Siniq river . The small river Bresons forms the southeastern municipal boundary; to the south is the Barrage du Sarrans reservoir . Rodez , the former capital of the Rouergue, is about 86 km (driving distance) south; the small town of Aurillac is about 49 km to the west.

history

Around the year 1000, the then Vice Count von Carlat founded a ladies' abbey, the church of which has been preserved. Around 1185 the monastery became a priory dependent on Blesle Abbey . The place developed around the monastery.

The population decline in the 20th century is mainly related to job losses as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For a long time, the place Thérondels served the exclusively agriculturally oriented and self- sufficient hamlets ( hameaux ) and individual farmsteads in the area as a center of handicrafts, trade and services. Since the middle of the 20th century tourism has played a not insignificant role for the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

  • The former Notre-Dame monastery church is built from precisely hewn stones and covered with stone shingles ( lauzes ). The undivided apse ends in a partially figurative console frieze . The west tower, structured in the lower area by high blind arches, ends in a wide-open bell storey; on its south side there is a round stair tower . The multi-tiered Romanesque portal is on the south side and protrudes slightly from the wall. The single nave and barrel vaulted interior of the church was extended by two side chapels in the 16th century ; it still shows some Romanesque capitals . The church building was classified as a monument historique in 1975 . Particularly noteworthy is a late Romanesque crucifix inside the church.

  • The Château de Mandilhac few remains are preserved; they are located on an artificially created hill ( Motte ) near the village.
Laussac
  • The Chapelle de Laussac is located on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Barrage du Sarrans reservoir in the south of the municipality ( 44 ° 51 ′ 12 ″  N , 2 ° 46 ′ 17 ″  E ). It is a single-nave building from the 12th century, made of stone, with a flat bell gable ( clocher mur ), which formerly belonged to a priory, but whose cloister buildings are no longer preserved. The interior is covered with an open roof and houses a baroque altar . The church building was classified as a monument historique in 1974 .

Others

A raw milk cheese of the same name is produced in the region around Thérondels , which matures for between 4 and 6 months.
