history

Small Planet Airlines Germany planes in Paderborn / Lippstadt Airport (NRW)

Small Planet Airlines Germany was founded on May 22nd, 2015 in Berlin . Andreas Wobig and Oliver Pawel were appointed as managing directors, who were still managing directors of the Berlin-based airline Germania until October 2014 .

From October 2015, flights were operated from Düsseldorf Airport , among others . However, since at that time they did not have a German air traffic operator's certificate, planes from the Polish and Lithuanian Small Planet Airlines were used.

After the official inauguration of the offices in Berlin in December 2015, the German air transport operator certificate was received in May 2016.

On September 18, 2018, Small Planet Airlines GmbH filed for bankruptcy in self-administration at the Charlottenburg district court . The airline announced that flight operations should be maintained in the long term. The bankruptcy led to difficulties at the sister companies , especially Small Planet Airlines Poland was hit by the bankruptcy; it had to reduce its fleet at short notice and also file for bankruptcy under Polish law on October 8, 2018.

In October 2018 it became known that the Berlin-based company group Zeitfracht , which had already taken over the airline WDL Aviation and the former Air Berlin subsidiary Leisure Cargo , was bidding for Small Planet Airlines Germany. The company should be sold for a symbolic price and the fleet reduced to four machines, which should be operated in wet leases for other companies. For the takeover, however, security commitments from the Lithuanian parent company were necessary, as important tasks, including CAMO , had previously been taken over by the latter. As these promises could not be given, Zeitfracht broke off negotiations on October 16.

Small Planet Germany lost important customers due to the bankruptcy. Initially, Thomas Cook discontinued the cooperation in the Netherlands, then Tuifly took over the flights from Paderborn / Lippstadt for TUI Germany . Later it became known that TUI flights from Leipzig / Halle , first of Germania can be carried out before it by February 2019 from Condor are performed. Also booked DER Touristik , the main customer for Small Planet flights from Cologne / Bonn and Hamburg , their customers to other companies in order.

At the end of October 2018 negotiations were in progress with SF Aviation Holding BV, which also belongs to VLM Airlines Brussels . However, no agreement could be reached by October 31, so flight operations were initially suspended on November 1. In addition, the staff was dismissed on October 31. Should an agreement be reached, Small Planet Germany could operate with a maximum of 2 machines in winter. While the four Airbus A320-200 returned on November 1 and 2 to the lessor, the two were Airbus A321-200 at the Airport Paderborn / Lippstadt off, is made until a final decision, so that timely reactivation was possible. On November 2, 2018, company circles announced that Small Planet Germany was also in negotiations with the Turkish Onur Air .

The operating license was limited by the Federal Aviation Office, initially until October 28, 2018, later the limitation was extended to November 4. The initially last scheduled flight landed in Hamburg at noon on November 1, 2018. On November 9, 2018, it was announced that SF Aviation Holding intends to take over the company. A preliminary agreement was signed which, however, does not trigger a purchase obligation. However, the reactivation of flight operations must happen within the next 6 months, otherwise the company's Air Operator Certificate will expire. At the end of November 2018, it became known that the sale to SF Aviation Holding had failed. Self-administration ended on December 1, 2018 and regular bankruptcy proceedings were opened. Creditors can enter their claims in the insolvency table up to January 20, 2019; the examination date by the insolvency court is scheduled for February 26, 2019. Around 10,000 injured passengers have made claims for compensation of around 5 million euros against Small Planet Airlines.

In December 2019 it became known that the Federal Environment Agency had imposed a fine of millions on the insolvent company. Before going bankrupt, Small Planet Airlines acquired too few emission allowances for their CO 2 emissions. The claim of 10.2 million euros consists of a fine and the subsequent acquisition of authorizations.

Destinations

Since May 2016, flights have been operated under German approval for TUI , the FTI Group and the Thomas Cook Group . The airports in Bremen , Hamburg , Cologne / Bonn , Münster / Osnabrück , Leipzig / Halle , Hanover-Langenhagen , Düsseldorf and Paderborn / Lippstadt primarily served destinations in the Mediterranean region and North Africa . On behalf of the FTI Group and DER Touristik, an aircraft was stationed at Cologne / Bonn Airport, which flew passengers to Agadir , Rhodes , Antalya , Hurghada and Marsa Alam in the 2018 summer flight schedule . In July 2018, Small Planet Airlines Germany added the destination Allenstein in Poland to its program.

Various machines from sister companies and from ACMI suppliers were also used.

Incidents

Small Planet Airlines Germany has not recorded any incidents with injuries or the loss of aircraft in its history, but an engine of the Airbus A321-200 with the registration D-ASPC was struck by a foreign object when landing at Marsa Alam airport on June 6, 2018 damaged. The machine then failed for around three months in the main season because the Small Planet Group could not organize a replacement engine. This incident and its consequences contributed significantly to the company's insolvency.

criticism

In 2018, there were frequent massive flight delays and flight cancellations. Passengers had to accept delays of several days. With a record of delays of over 70 hours and other frequent delays between 24 and 52 hours, the airline counts alongside Joon , Twin Jet and Hop! one of the least punctual or flight-canceled airlines in Europe.
