The Marsa Alam International Airport ( IATA code RMF , ICAO code HEMA ) is an Egyptian airport on the Red Sea . It is located around 60 km as the crow flies north-northwest of Marsa Alam . Marsa Alam is the first private airport in the country and opened on November 1st, 2001. The airport was built by the “ MA Kharafi Group of Kuwait ” to bring tourists comfortably to the nearby hotel complexes and to the diving centers in southern Egypt on the Red Sea. This eliminates the hour-long bus journey (up to 270 km) to and from Hurghada Airport in the direction of the south.
Airlines and Destinations
Several airlines fly from German-speaking countries to Marsa Alam, some of them seasonally; these flight connections serve a predominantly tourist demand.
Location and facilities
The airport is isolated on an elevated plateau in the middle of the desert, far from the nearest settlements (with the exception of the small tourist town of Port Ghalib, which also belongs to Marsa Alam ). Due to the high security measures, it cannot be entered or exited on foot from the coastal road and has no public transport connection. There are also no public or private taxis on site. Travelers must therefore arrange a pick-up with their hotel; After each arrival of an aircraft, the passengers are therefore gathered in groups at the exit and taken to the waiting buses. Inside the airport there is the usual infrastructure of restaurants, telephones, toilets and ATMs that can use EC cards.
