geography

Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac is located in the Massif Central in the Aubrac region and is the capital of the canton of the same name . The municipality of Aubrac also includes the hamlet of Aubrac , where the old monastery and hospice Dômerie d'Aubrac was located. The houses stand in a valley through which the Boralde de Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac flows, which originates in Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac. The nearest major French cities are Lyon (199 km) in the northeast, Toulouse (161 km) in the southwest, Bordeaux (279 km) in the west and Montpellier (133 km) in the southeast.

history

The name Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac recalls Saint Eligius , to whom the monastery, founded here in the late 11th century, was dedicated. However, the monastery was soon subordinated to the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille and merged with the Dômerie d'Aubrac . Since then, the flag and coat of arms of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac have borne the octagonal cross of the knights and the scallop shell .

The place was almost completely destroyed by wandering gangs in 1385 and only rebuilt years later.

The population is falling sharply. In 1793 the population was 2034 and rose to 3326 inhabitants by 1831. In 1999 there were still 532 residents. Christiane Marfin has been the mayor since 2014.

The municipality is a member of the transnational protected area system Natura 2000 . In 1995, a botanical garden with more than 500 thematically arranged plants, the Jardin botanique d'Aubrac , was opened on the site of the former Domerie d'Aubrac monastery hospital .

Until 2015, Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac was the chief town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac . After a reorganization of the cantons, the place belongs to the newly founded canton Aubrac et Carladez with Laguiole as the main place (bureau centralisateur).
