The French community Arzacq-Arraziguet is located in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Artix et Pays de Soubestre (until 2015 the capital of the canton of Arzacq-Arraziguet ).

The GR 65 long-distance hiking trail , which largely follows the historical course of the French Way of St. James, Via Podiensis , leads through the town, which has 1089 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) .

Arzacq-Arraziguet is located in southwest France in the northern Pyrenees foothills. The place belongs to the historical area of ​​the Béarn , which borders on the French Basque Country . The next town is Lescar , which can be reached in a southerly direction via the D40 after 28 kilometers of road. It is only a few kilometers from Pau . The closest major French cities are Toulouse (149 km) in the east and Bordeaux (145 km) in the north. The municipality is drained to the north by the Louts River and the Arriou Stream . The small reservoir Lac d'Arzacq is located to the west of the municipality's capital .

The nearest international airport is the Aéroport de Pau-Pyrénées , which can be reached via route D40 - D208 after around 23 kilometers. The nearest train station is in Pau and is connected to the TGV network of the SNCF . There is also a bus connection there. Arzacq-Arraziguet is connected to the French highway network via the A64 Briscous (on the Atlantic Ocean, near the Spanish border) - Toulouse , and the N134 ( Bordeaux - Pau). The closest motorway connections to the A64 are Orthez (8) and Pau (10).

history

There are traces of settlement in the municipality of Arzacq-Arraziguet from Gallo-Roman times. In the 13th century a fortified village (French: Bastide ) was founded around a hill by the English, who at that time had sovereignty over this area. The village experienced an upswing in the 14th century. This was achieved thanks to its market, because it was the trade routes at the crossroads of Aire-sur-l'Adour - Orthez and Saint-Sever - Pau , and on one of the roads to Santiago to Santiago de Compostela .

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )

The place offers a pilgrim hostel (French: Gîte d'étape ) hotels and a tourist office as well as a campsite. The further path leads over the hills of the Pyrenees foothills. Meadows, fields, vineyards and small forests on the hills alternate. Shortly before Arthez-de-Béarn , a variant branches off from the GR 65 and follows the historic salt trade route, only to rejoin the main route in Argagnon at Gave de Pau . The next larger town is Arthez-de-Béarn. The road connection there is via the D946. On the GR 65 there are other pilgrim hostels in Uzan, Pomps and Castillon.

Culture and economy

  • The place is essentially grouped around two squares, the Place de la République and the Place du Marcadieu . The squares are lined with old country houses, some of which stand on arcades.
  • There are two wayside crosses at the 19th century church.
  • A little outside of the village is an old roofed washing area.
  • The Jambon de Bayonne Museum shows the history of local ham production.

A large part of the population works in agriculture as well as horse and cattle breeding. Local products are wine and corn .
