history

The Basque name Izura-Azme means "slope below the rocky height ".

The name Ostabat appears as: Ostebad (1167), Ostavayll (12th century), Aussebat (1243), Ostabailles (1383), Sent-Johan d'Ostabat (1469), Ostabag and Hostabat (1472), Nostre-Done de l'espitau d'Ostabat (1518) and Ostabat (1650). The name Asme appears as: Azme (1481).

Ostabat is derived from the historical affiliation to the area Pays d'Ostabarret , belonging to Niedernavarra (French Basse-Navarre ), which included the French part of the former Kingdom of Navarre . Ostabat and Asme were merged on June 13, 1841.

The place arose on the important Roman road that ran from Bordeaux via Pamplona to Astorga . From the 10th century onwards, Ostabat has been an important place for pilgrims , because three pilgrimage routes, the Via Turonensis coming from Tours, the Via Lemovicensis coming from Vézelay and the Via Podiensis coming from Le Puy-en-Velay , meet here. This place made it particularly attractive to collect road tolls. In 1350 there were two hospices and over ten pilgrims' hostels, where up to 5,000 pilgrims could stay.
