history

Béhasque appears in the writings under the toponyms Befasquen (1120), Sanctus Petrus de Behaschen (1120), Basquan (1344), Beasquen (1350), Behasquen (1513, documents from Pamplona ) Behascan (1621, after Martin de Viscay). Lapiste appears in the forms Sancta Maria de Lepiste (1160), L'Apisto and Lapiste (1350 and 1413), Lapista (1513, documents from Pamplona). On the map of Cassini in 1750, the district of Béhasque is entered as Behasquen , Lapiste since then under the current toponym. Béhasque is listed as Behasque during the French Revolution in 1793 and during the French Consulate eight years later.

After the French Revolution, a single pastor resided in Lapiste and the two parishes were merged in 1803, before the two villages were finally merged administratively on October 16, 1842.

Population development

After a temporary high of just over 400 inhabitants when the two former municipalities merged, the number fell by around 40% by the 1950s. The population doubled by the 1970s, fell again by around 20% in the following 15 years, and has increased again to this day.

Attractions

Church Saint-Pierre in Béhasque
  • Church in Béhasque, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . As can be seen from the scriptures, there was a church as early as the 12th century, the condition of which deteriorated after the French Revolution, so the community decided to rebuild, which was carried out between 1857 and 1869. In 1884 the church tower above the entrance was badly damaged in a storm that it was rebuilt between 1897 and 1898. At the same time, the walls of the nave were also restored. These works were influenced by the neo-Gothic style emerging in the 19th century . One of the oldest disc-shaped grave stelae in the Basque Country can be found in the adjacent cemetery . It is dated to the year 1630 and bears the name of the deceased: "Catalina Delitxa". These grave stelae, popular at the time, are a reminder of the prehistoric traditions in the Basque Country.
  • Lapiste Chapel. As can be seen from the scriptures this time, there was already a church on this site in the 12th century, which was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . A hermit once also retired here. Since the amalgamation of the parishes, the chapel has had to cede its function as a local church to the larger Saint-Pierre church in Béhasque. It was profaned in 1973 and sold to a private owner.
  • Ford of Quinquil across the Bidouze. It could form part of the old route from Mauléon to Saint-Palais, which served as a feeder to the Via Podiensis , one of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . The timing of the ford is uncertain. It is formed from flat stone blocks in the river bed of the Bidouze, which is dammed about 30 m wide.
