history

Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse is first mentioned as Beiria in 1072 according to Jean-Baptiste Orpustan's Nouvelle toponymie basque . Further toponyms were subsequently Berina , Beirie and Beiries (1119), Beyrina (1125), Sanctus Julianus de Beirie (1160), Beyrina (1292), Beyrie (1350), Sent Juliaa de Beyrie (1472, notaries from Labastide-Villefranche ), Beyria and Veyria (1621, after Martin de Viscay). On the map of Cassini in 1750, the municipality is entered as Beyrie , during the French Revolution in 1793 as Beirie and eight years later as Beyrie during the French Consulate . To distinguish it from the municipality of the same name Beyrie-en-Béarn , the addition "sur-Joyeuse" has been added since 1961.

The municipality is on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . That is why there was a pilgrimage hostel there in the Middle Ages . The noble families of Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse were always loyal to the kings of Navarre , who in return gave them influential positions in the kingdom. The first Ainziburu family had their heyday in the 13th century, when they had the honor of being present when they swore the feudal oath to Sancho the Strong . The von Beyrie family, who gave the parish its name, resided in a 13th century castle that was built on the site of a former mound castle . During the Second World War , the community was occupied by German troops, which resulted in the castle being considerably damaged.

coat of arms

Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into four fields and can be interpreted as follows according to Guy Ascarat, heraldist and historian.

The lion (king on earth) and the eagle (king of the skies) are the common figures that are most frequently contrasted in communal coats of arms. Both are signs of strength and power. The eagle symbol, however, has a larger military connotation .

The coat of arms is that of the feudal lords of Domezain in the Soule , who received the fief of Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse in 1440 through a marriage between Guillaume de Domezain and Jeanne de Beyrie.

Population development

After the population peaked at over 900 in the middle of the 19th century, rural exodus began and the number in waves reduced to less than half by the 1960s. Since then it has increased again by around 20%.

  • Parish church, since 1830 dedicated to St. Julien I, the first bishop of Lescar . He Christianized the area around the oppidum Beneharnum in the 5th century , from which the community of Lescar later developed. Originally Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse belonged to the diocese of Lescar before it was transferred to the diocese of Bayonne . After the French Revolution, the condition of the previous church deteriorated. Therefore, in 1886, the community decided to build an almost complete new building, which was completed in 1889, as evidenced by the inscription Raedeficata anno Domini 1889 under the porch of the portal. The single-nave , slate- roofed building has a floor plan in the form of a Latin cross , with the transept made up of two chapels. As with many Basque churches, there are galleries on three sides of the interior of the church.
  • Ruins of the castle of Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse. A feudal lord of Beyrie is mentioned in the writings of the 12th century, an associated castle only from 1320. At the beginning, the castle was extended several times to four residential wings over the centuries. Restored in the 16th century, it suffered multiple damage during World War II that made it uninhabitable.
  • The rectory was probably built in the 16th century. It is an authentic house from Navarre with the traditionally used ox blood colors. The facade is decorated with a niche crowned with a cross, in which there is a statue of Christ, from which the viewer can get the impression that she watches over the house and over every guest.
  • Jauberria farm. Built in the 18th century, it is one of the oldest preserved houses in the municipality. As with all Basque farms, the ground floor was originally intended to house cattle, which explains the large openings. The special thing about the architecture in the Pays de Mixe is the timber framework only at the height of the first floor, on which the living rooms, the rooms for supplies and the hay floors are located.
