Aldudes is a French municipality with 322 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayonne and the canton of Montagne Basque (until 2015: canton of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry ).

The residents are called Aldulais . The name in the Basque language is Aldude .

geography

Aldudes is located about 70 kilometers south of Bayonne in the southern part of the Vallée des Aldudes in the French part of the Basque Country . The municipality borders in the north-west and south-west with the autonomous community of Navarre in northern Spain . The highest point in the municipality is Urrixka (1000 m).

Aldudes is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Aldudes is located in the river Adour catchment area . The Nive des Aldudes , a tributary of the Nive , with its numerous tributaries crosses the municipality.

history

Aldudes was first mentioned in the 14th century. The former Kingdom of Navarre has been divided since 1512, but the actual demarcation of this part was controversial for a long time. The contract of 1856 regulates the responsibilities to this day for the Pays Quint , which forms part of Aldudes. The area belongs to Spain, but is administered by France. The residents are French nationals and can cultivate the land.

coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into four fields and can be interpreted as follows according to Guy Ascarat , heraldist and historian.

The field at the top right shows the monogram of the Virgin, the patron saint of the place.

The three wood pigeons at the top left tell of the documents of the 14th century that regulated the hunting of wood pigeons on the Col de Lepeder , today in the Spanish part of Navarre.

Lachua is a forerunner of today's pelota . The techte lower field shows a glove for the traditional Basque ball game. In 1952 the last Lachua game took place in Aldudes.

The crown on a red background stands for the King of Navarre, the "K", derived from Quinto Real , for the pigs that were allowed to graze on the Pays Quint for a fee ( Quinto = one fifth) .

Attractions

Chapel of the Assumption
  • Notre-Dame church, dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus , was originally built at the end of the 17th century and destroyed during the French Revolution . The current building was erected in the middle of the 18th century, as evidenced by the inscription on the keystone of the arch of the entrance portal . Inside the single-nave building, wooden galleries extend over two levels. In the Basque Country, men and women traditionally celebrate mass separately, with the galleries being reserved for men.
  • Chapel of the Assumption. Contrary to the wishes of the community council, the inhabitants of the Esnazu district built a church in 1868, as evidenced by the inscription on the keystone of the arch of the entrance portal. Inside the single-nave building, there are galleries on two levels, which can be reached in this chapel via two stairs inside and an outside staircase.
  • Several old farms have been preserved. The Iguxkagerrea farm from the second half of the 18th century is now a sheep farm . The ground floor serves as a stable for the animals, the first floor houses the living rooms and the top floor houses the hayloft. The balcony above the first floor, on which the seeds are traditionally dried, is typical of the region’s farmhouses . In the style of Upper Navarre , the farmhouse is built entirely of stone without half-timbering . On the other hand, the corners of the house are decorated with purple / dusky pink stones. The Menementa and Joalginenborda farms date from the first half of the 19th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy is mainly determined by fish and livestock farming. This includes in particular the breeding of Basque black-footed pigs .

Aldudes is located in the AOC areas of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
