Mendionde

Bonloc is located in the river Adour catchment area . A tributary of the Bidouze , the Joyeuse , which is still called Aran here, crosses the local area. The Garraldako Erreka flows into the Joyeuse in the center of the municipality.

history

The church is built in an earlier earth belt, which could indicate settlement as early as prehistory .

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the mention of the Romanesque church of the village in the form of Ecclesia de Bono Loco in 1186 in the copy book of the Diocese of Bayonne , called "Golden Book". Documents from 1194 show that the Commandery of the Monastery of Roncesvalles in Bono Loco , as well as the pilgrims' hostel , received pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . The commandery exercised the manorial rule until the 17th century , which led to various hostilities from the neighboring landlord families, such as the Sault or Mont Real.

Further toponyms of the community were subsequently Lo ospital de Bon-Loc (1372), Le Bonlieu (1498), Nostre Dame de Bonloc (1518, deed of the Diocese of Bayonne). On the map of Cassini 1750 the parish is drawn as Bonloc, listed in the same form during the French Revolution in 1793, during the French Consulate eight years later as Bouloc and Bonloc .

Population development

After a temporary high of 350 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell by more than half by the first half of the 20th century. Since then it has more than doubled and exceeded the previous high.

Bridge and former watermill in Bonloc
  • Church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . A local church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary had existed in Bonloc since the 12th century. After the wars with the landlords of the neighboring communities and the Huguenot Wars at the end of the 16th century, the building deteriorated. The architect Émile Doyère, responsible for buildings in the diocese of Bayonne, launched a project in 1879 to build a new church for the community. The work was completed in 1882. The stained glass windows are the work of Charles-François Champigneulle from Bar-le-Duc . The wall paintings that adorn the nave and apse are from the Decrept studio in Bayonne around 1900 . The wood paneling and the galleries on three sides of the interior are typical elements of the churches in the region.
  • Grotto dedicated to Mary , the mother of Jesus. The natural grotto is a sanctuary that contains a statue of the Virgin Mary.
  • Former watermill and bridge. Not far from the former water mill, which is now a residential building, an old bridge spans the Joyeuse.
