geography

Amendeuix-Oneix is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Bayonne in the French part of the Basque Country . It is part of the so-called Pays de Mixe , a high valley of the Bidouze in the historical region of Lower Navarra .

Amendeuix-Oneix is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Amendeuix-Oneix lies in the catchment area of the Adour River and is crossed by the Bidouze and its tributaries, the Joyeuse , which marks a large part of the eastern municipal boundary, and u. a. the creeks Salarteko Ereka , Algeiruko Ereka and Zubiaga Ereka .

history

Amendeuix and Oneix are two former parishes whose names appear in documents from 1150 . A hamlet of Amendeuix, Iriberry , has bastide features and could date from the 13th century.

The two villages merged on August 27, 1846.

coat of arms

Amendeuix-Oneix coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into four fields and according to Guy Ascarat , heraldist and historian, can be interpreted as follows:

The coat of arms is composed of the coats of arms of the noble houses la Salle de Oneix (top left and bottom right) and la Salle de Amendeuix (top right and bottom left).

The oak reminds of strength and immortality through its recurring regeneration. The wild boar is characterized by courage and ferocity. But only the combination of these symbols creates an allegory of love for the country. The forest and the animal are inextricably linked and tell of rural life in the Ancien Régime . The wood was used for heating, building houses and bridges, and supplying the forge. The pigs had exercise in the forest, acorns and chestnuts were harvested there.

A blue wave usually resembles a river or the sea, which is not the case here, and so the symbolism is beyond explanation.

Saint Pierre Church of Oneix
  • Amendeuix Church, dedicated to John the Baptist . Like many other sacred buildings in the region, the church was in disrepair after the French Revolution . Reconstruction seemed indispensable and took place between 1865 and 1872. However, the new building turned out to be too unstable, so that the church remained closed to the public. In 1903 it was finally demolished again and rebuilt. The lead glass windows were made in 1904 by the Bordelais glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant .
  • Church of Oneix, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . Although the parish of Oneix has existed since at least the 13th century, the church is of much more recent origin. The oldest elements of today's building date from the eve of the French Revolution, as evidenced by the engraving of the year 1787 above the main entrance. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became necessary to replace the crumbling roof and bell tower. During the work in 1903, new glass windows were installed by the Toulouse glass painter Amédée Bergès .
  • Watermill Amenduzoko Eihera . Determining the year of construction of the Amendeuix mill is difficult. Although the year 1715 can be seen above the door of the mill, it is believed that it was the year of an extension and that the original construction can be dated to before 1660.
