coat of arms

Coat of arms of Saint-Esteben

The municipality has had the coat of arms of the lords of Saint-Esteben since 2003. It can be interpreted as follows, after Guy Ascarat, heraldist and historian.

The tree represents the oak in the Basque Country, one of the strongest symbols. Because of the resistance to the elements and the grandeur of its wood, it commands respect through its power and strength. In his ability to constantly regenerate, he is the epitome of permanence and immortality. The tree represents life on earth. The bird is a magpie, in earlier times a lucky charm. Its position on the treetop lies between heaven and earth and it is therefore a symbol for a messenger, because it transports the souls of the deceased to heaven.

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 800 in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell to around 360 with short recovery phases by the turn of the millennium. As a result, considerable growth has been recorded to this day.

Parish Church of Saint-Etienne
  • Parish church consecrated to Saint Stephen . From 1320 the parish and the bell tower were mentioned in the records. It is a reference to a first church, of which no traces have been left. It was probably destroyed in the Huguenot Wars , and at the end of the successive clashes, the current church was built during the 17th century. The first work on the new building was carried out after 1620. The facade was completed in 1692, as evidenced by the year above the entrance on the west side. In the 18th century a rectory was added to the building and the interior of the church was equipped with galleries and the choir , which was completed with a railing in the following century . The current temple has elements of a traditional Basque church, a simple, with panel-like provided nave , galleries on two levels and richly decorated objects in the choir. The parish church of Saint-Esteben has been classified as a Monument historique since April 29, 1999 . The altar retable in the choir is richly decorated with plant motifs on gold plating, pillars with capitals , sculptures of cherubins and a variety of statues . One depicts St. Stephen in the middle in the clothes of a deacon , and above the cornice, another depicts Christ crucified . On a side altar is the statue of Joseph of Nazareth with an iris as a symbol of purity in his left hand. A stained glass window in the church is also dedicated to St. Stephen. It shows him upright in the clothes of a deacon and holding a book, a recurring attribute that indicates his erudition.
