Saint-Jean-de-Luz ( Basque Donibane Lohizune ) is a French municipality with 14,093 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is located in the Arrondissement of Bayonne and is the capital (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of the same name . Saint-Jean-de-Luz is part of the historic Basque Province of Labourd .
geography
The bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is located in the Bay of Biscay (French golfe de Gascogne ) and is the only protected port between Arcachon and the Spanish border. Thanks to its dams, which protect the city from the massive waves of the Atlantic , it has developed into a famous seaside resort on the Côte Basque . The seaside resort is relatively new, but the port itself is very old. The Nivelle river flows into the sea in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Jean-de-Luz .
Culture
Due to its location in the French Basque Country , Saint-Jean-de-Luz has a very strong Basque culture. The typical architecture is particularly noticeable on the beach, and some restaurants are named Basque and furnished accordingly. The German writer Ernst von Salomon lived here in 1930/31, about which he wrote so lovingly in his book The Questionnaire that it was even published in 1950 as Glück in France .
The Saint-Jean-de-Luz Film Festival is held annually in October.
Attractions
- The Château d'Urtubie in Urrugne , built in 1341, expanded in the 16th and 19th centuries, now operated as a hotel (guided tours).
- The Saint-Jean Baptiste church. Here Louis XIV married the Infanta Maria Teresa of Spain in 1660 .
Personalities
The composer Maurice Ravel was born in the neighboring town of Ciboure . Today the local music academy of the same name commemorates the composer.
