history

Aroue was one of the seven districts of the Soule . In Ithorots there was a lay monastery as a fiefdom of the Vice Count of Soule. Olhaïby was also a fiefdom of Soule, its owner was one of the ten Potestas of Soule. The Protestant population was very much against church and state. During the French Revolution she transformed the church into a "temple of reason".

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )

There is only a small communal pilgrimage hostel (French: Gîte d'étape ) and a campsite in the village . The GR 65 leads directly to Ostabat-Asme , while the historical variant turns in the hamlet of Lukia to Saint-Palais and reunites with the GR 65 in Hiriburia. The seemingly original landscape consists mainly of meadows and forests with small hamlets and farms. The peaks of the Pyrenees are within reach. On the route to Ostabat-Asme there are still overnight accommodations in Saint-Palais and a little south of the GR 65 in Uhart-Mixe . The road connection to Saint-Palais is the D11 , from there the D933 leads to Ostabat-Asme.

Culture and sights

  • It is a village and shows the typical architecture of the western Basque Country. The houses with pitched roofs are tiled and the walls are whitewashed. Some of the houses are from the sixteenth century. As in any Basque village, the pelota court is located near the church.
  • The Saint-Étienne church is of Romanesque origin. In the 19th century it was completely renovated so that little can be seen of its origin. The figure above the door to the sacristy is said to represent the apostle James as the slayer of the Moors, in Spanish Santiago Matamoros . This interpretation comes from Dr. Urrutibetehy, who dealt intensively with the pilgrimage paths in this region and also determined the place for the stele of Gibraltar , where the three main French routes to Santiago de Compostela converge.
