history

Settlement began in the Middle Ages around the seat of the noble family who gave the village their name. In 1424 Méharin was raised to Vicomté by the King of Navarre . As a result of this expansion of the local aristocratic family's power, Méharin subsequently became an object of contention for conflicts of interest between various actors in the nobility. With the acquisition of the castle, the village saw several successors in the manor . In the 17th century, the Armendaritz family decided on a strategic alliance with the Belzunce family, who from then on ruled Méharin. The history of Méharin remained turbulent, especially during the French Revolution when the castle was confiscated.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Laurent in Méharin
  • Parish church dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . It was probably built later than the parish churches of other parishes around Saint-Palais , because it was first mentioned in the scriptures in the 16th century. The church was restored in the 19th century. The stained glass windows date from 1868 and are the work of the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux . The single nave nave with two side chapels is completed with a striking bell tower as the entrance porch, which was rebuilt in 1925 and whose height is emphasized by its polygonal helmet . Inside, a wooden gallery surrounds the nave on three sides. The altarpiece , like the whole church, is dedicated to St. Lawrence. In the center of it is the scene of his martyrdom when he was executed on a red-hot iron grate in Rome . Two stone Navarra crosses are leaning against an outer wall of the parish church. Their shape is reminiscent of the disk-shaped grave stelae, known as Hilarri , which are widespread in the Basque Country and also occur in the Méharin cemetery . However, these steles show a further development with regard to an affirmation of the Christian faith. The disc has been replaced by a Christian cross and displaces the essential reference to paganism. The location in the immediate vicinity of the parish church and the quality of the engravings suggest that they belonged to important personalities in the community. They are dedicated to Marie and Arnaud Larramendi from the House of Handieta, who died on June 2, 1850 and December 1846, respectively, as the inscriptions in the Basque language reveal. The two crosses are identical except for the inscriptions. As decorations are u. a. Rosettes , hearts with crosses on top or another flower whose petals are reminiscent of the arms of a Basque cross or Lauburu .
Castle of Méharin
  • Castle of Méharin. What is striking about the building, which was first mentioned in the scriptures in 1385, are the crowd watch towers that protrude from the facade at all four corners. The Belzunce family, who acquired the Vicomté in the 17th century through a marriage from the Armendaritz family, lived in the castle until the French Revolution, when it was confiscated as emigrant property. During this time, many French emigrated because of the revolution in order to evade it or even to fight it. Numerous decrees deprived aristocrats of their property and privileges and forbade their return to France on pain of death. Méharin Castle was bought back in 1825 and restored in the 19th century. Today it is privately owned and cannot be visited.
