School for the sick

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A school for the sick is an educational institution for children who are unable to attend a regular school due to long-term inpatient or day hospital treatment . Schools for the sick are legally mostly classified as special schools , but in contrast to these are not specifically aimed at disabled people. They are mostly organizationally affiliated with hospitals or child and adolescent psychiatrics, but they can also be independent.

Schools for the sick are based on the curriculum of the mainstream schools, but the lessons are adapted to the special needs of the children. Depending on the severity of the illness, both individual lessons in front of the sick bed and lessons in small study groups are possible. Since mentally ill children make up a large part of the target group, special educators specializing in educational assistance are preferred .

The aim of the school for the sick is always to reintegrate into the mainstream school after surviving illness and discharge from the hospital.
