Pagolle is a French municipality with 261 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Bayonne arrondissement and the canton of Pays de Bidache, Amikuze et Ostibarre (until 2015: canton of Saint-Palais ).
The name of the municipality is Pagola in the Basque language . The residents are called accordingly Pagolar .
geography
Pagolle is about 65 km southeast of Bayonne on the border with the historic provinces of Lower Navarra and Soule in the French part of the Basque Country .
The highest point in the municipality is the Mehalzu ( 648 m ).
Pagolle is surrounded by the neighboring communities:
Arhansus | Uhart mixes | Lohitzun-Oyhercq |
Joke | Ordiarp | |
Saint-Just-Ibarre | Musculdy |
Pagolle is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . Tributaries of the Bidouze irrigate the area of the municipality, the Larramendiko Erreka, which rises in Pagolle, and the Ispatchoury Erreka, also called Pagolla Uraitza. The latter forms the border between the Lower Navarre and the Soule.
history
On the highest point in the municipality, the Mehalzu, was a fortified camp at more than 600 m altitude during the Bronze or Iron Ages , which allowed the residents to control the paths between the valleys. In addition to its military function, it probably also had a religious function.
The area of the municipality belongs to the Lower Navarra in the western part and to the Soule in the eastern part. In the Middle Ages , the Lower Navarre part was farmed under the direction of monks and this part was subordinate to the diocese of Bayonne . The souletin land belonged to the diocese of Oloron at the same time . There was a priory there that received pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela who passed here on the stretch between Ostabat and Ordiarp. The priory, which was ruled by Premonstratensians , was a gift from the Viscount of Soule to the Abbey of Arhous near Hastingues in what is now the Landes department .
On March 19, 1829, the “Pagolle-Oyhana” district was transferred from the neighboring municipality of Juxue to the municipality of Pagolle by decree of the French king.

Attractions
- Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . The surrounding wall, the masonry bond visible in the nave , the base of the columns and the ogival main entrance allow the construction of the original building to date to the end of the Middle Ages. The large porch dates back to the 17th century and its floor was originally covered with grave slabs taken from a recent restoration. The current church is probably the result of a new building towards the end of the 19th century. In this context, stained glass windows by the glass painter Pierre-Gustave Dagrand were installed in the apse . Other stained glass windows with motifs of religious people date from 1930 and are works by Mauméjean stained glass . A bell gable rises up between the porch and the single nave nave. Inside the church, a wooden gallery consisting of two levels surrounds the nave on three sides. Two side chapels form a transept. In the cemetery that surrounds the church, there are disc-shaped grave steles, called Hilarri .
Economy and Infrastructure
