Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . The current church was built in the 18th century as a replacement for an earlier church from the 12th century. As is customary in the Basque Country, the church and the surrounding cemetery are walled. In the cemetery there are disc-shaped grave steles called Hilarri and graves with Navarra crosses. The Hilarri build on the tradition of pre-Christian times and were very popular in the Basque Country between the 16th and 18th centuries. A generous porch made of wood extends around today's church. At one of its ends there is a memorial plaque commemorating the soldiers who died in the First World War . During the French Revolution, the church was looted and only part of its altarpiece could be saved. It is covered with gold plating and shows a multitude of religious figures with painted skin-colored faces. Two statues on the back wall flank the altarpiece, depicting the Madonna with Child Jesus and St. Joseph . Before the revolution, these were certainly integrated into the altarpiece. The intertwined letters “M” and “A” for Marie de l'Assomption are engraved on the altar as a dedication to the patron saint of the church .
