Suhast is a former municipality and merged with the former municipality of Camou-Mixe on March 22, 1842 to form the municipality of Camou-Mixe-Suhast , which was incorporated into the village of Aïcirits in 1972 . coat of arms
The coat of arms of the municipality is composed of the coats of arms of the former villages, on the top left the coat of arms of Aïcirits, on the top right that of Camou and below that of Suhast.
Although it is not known which bishop bore the Aïcirits coat of arms, it is undoubtedly of ecclesiastical origin. The crossed keys show the power to open or close the kingdom of heaven. The globe with the cross at the top symbolizes the area of divine rule. The three red crosses could be derived from the coat of arms of the Order of the Redeemer, founded by Alfonso I the warrior after the capture of Saragossa in 1118.
The coat of arms of Camou is that of the Lords of Camou, mentioned in 1316.
Suhast's coat of arms is mentioned in 1350. The three oaks point to the origin of the name from Basque Zuha Ty , which means "tree planting". Oaks are common in the coats of arms of the Basque Country and are a symbol of strength and renewal.
Attractions
- The artificial hill on which the castle was built suggests that there had been a feudal castle on the site before. It was owned by the Camou family until the end of the 16th century and by the Gassion family from 1635 to 1791. Jean d'Abbadie acquired the abandoned ruin and rebuilt it to its current rectangular shape, flanked by a tower. The castle has been in municipal ownership since 1983, has undergone important restoration work and is now home to a museum with the theme "Country Life" with a collection of old tools.
- Salha Castle is a larger residential building from the 18th or 19th century. On a hill near the village, however, ruins of the medieval castle of the Salha family can be seen.
- Church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The parish of Saint-Martin d'Aïcirits is mentioned in the copial books of 1160. It can therefore be assumed that the porch of the 19th century church is of Romanesque origin. The coat of arms of the historic village of Aïcirits is carved above the porch .
- The Aïcirits mill was first mentioned in 1775.
