Genkel valley nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Genkel Valley nature reserve is an 8.2 hectare nature reserve (NSG) northwest of the Genkeltalsperre in the town of Meinerzhagen in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NSG was designated in 2001 by the district council of the Märkischer Kreis with the landscape plan No. 6 Meinerzhagen . The NSG is divided into two parts by a street. The north-western tip of the Genkeltalsperre with the inlet of the Genkel brook into the lake belongs to the NSG.

Area description

The NSG is the lower reaches of the Genkel with its floodplain up to the inlet into the Genkeltalsperre . There is a wooded border by the river. In the floodplain there are moist to wet meadows and pastures. The meadow valley typical of the landscape with extensively used wet and humid grassland, indigenous hardwood trees and a near-natural stream is the habitat of endangered and specific plant and animal communities. Locally rare reed beds and large sedge reeds are found by the stream.

Protection purpose

The nature reserve was designated for the conservation and development of the meadow valley and as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. As with other nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area became a nature reserve “because of its scenic beauty and uniqueness”.
