Halsou ( bask. Haltsu ) is a French municipality with 595 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

The village is located in the Nivetal , close to the border with Spain and about 15 km from the Atlantic coast.

Culture and sights

The church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption with its bell gable dates from the 16th century and was enlarged in the 18th century. The baroque music festival “La Dame des Aulnes” has been taking place here every July for several years . According to legend, the church in Halsou was built after a girl drowned while crossing the Nive on the way to Mass in Larressore.

history

The Basque name Haltsu has etymologically at one of alders towards vegetated area. Halsou belonged to the historic Basque province of Lapurdi ( French : Labourd ), which came to the Domaine royal ( crown domain ) in 1453 together with other parts of Aquitaine .

Economy and Infrastructure

Halsou is located in the Bayonne catchment area ( aire urbaine de Bayonne) . In 2006, around 73% of the population were counted as part of the working population . 5.8% of them were unemployed. Over 80% of the employed are out- commuters .

The place is one of the ten municipalities that are allowed to grow and sell the Basque pepper Piment d'Espelette under the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) designation of origin .

Halsou is located on the railway line from Bayonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port . The Halsou-Larressore train station is located on the territory of the municipality of Halsou.

The place has a Catholic bilingual primary school in private ownership.
