Aincille is a French commune of 112 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayonne and the canton of Montagne Basque (until 2015: canton of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ).
The inhabitants are called Aintzildars . The name in Basque language is Aintzila , translated: swamp hill.
geography
Aincille is located about 60 kilometers southeast of Bayonne near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French part of the Basque Country . The place is part of the Pays de Cize , a region in Lower Navarre . Aincille is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux in the north, Ahaxe-Alciette-Bascassan in the east, Estérençuby and Saint-Michel in the south and Caro in the north-west.
Aincille lies in the catchment area of the River Adour and is crossed by tributaries of the Nive , u. a. the Laurhibar and the Sassitakoereka and Urtchipia streams .
history
The village was first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Ancibiu . It was especially in the 17th century known as the 29 families the Saltworks of Ugarré built and operated before it in 1683 owned by the French crown fell.

coat of arms
The coat of arms is divided into four fields and can be interpreted as follows, according to Guy Ascarat , heraldist and historian: The field at the top left shows a bridge, possibly of Roman origin, which is located at the entrance to the village. The stars symbolize the districts. The black eagle at the top right commemorates the King of Navarre , who owned a forest of walnut trees near Aincille in the 13th century . The cow and sheep on the lower left are reminiscent of pasture farming in the Laurhibar valley. The church at the bottom right shows the village church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie et Saint-Jean-Baptiste .
Attractions
- The church, in honor of the Assumption of Mary and John the Baptist , was probably built in the 12th century and extensively remodeled during the 18th and 19th centuries. Only the west portal dates from the original construction period. Inside the single-nave building there are galleries like those found in all churches in the Basque Country. These are traditionally reserved for men during a fair . Access is provided by two stairs, one inside and one outside. The stained glass windows are works by the glass master Henri Gesta from Toulouse from 1923 and 1930. The processional cross dates from the 18th century.
- Calvary in the shape of a simple stone cross.
- The Idiondoa farm is a typical example of a rural settlement in the Basque Country. The courtyard was built in 1617, as indicated by an engraving on the lintel of the window in the middle of the first floor. During the 19th century the building was restored and extended.
Economy and Infrastructure
The economy is mainly determined by agriculture. Aincille is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa" and the wine-growing region of the Irouléguys .
