coat of arms

Arms of Armendarits

The coat of arms of the aristocratic family Armendarits, which appeared in the documents for the first time in 1256, was adopted by the municipality for the whole town in 2002. According to Guy Ascarat , heraldist and historian, it can be interpreted as follows.

The castle symbolizes security and protection, but also wealth and power. Generally speaking, the cows speak to maternal strength and fertility, but also to the productivity and abundance of the earth.

Saint-Pierre Church of Armendarits
  • Church of Saint-Pierre von Armendarits, today dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . Nothing of the church built in the Middle Ages and consecrated to Mary, Mother of Jesus has survived the centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, today's church was extensively rebuilt, enlarged and decorated with a wall painting. In the middle of the 19th century and again in the 20th century, the building was restored and now offers an interior typical of rural churches in the Basque Country. The nave is surmounted by two-storey wooden galleries along the west, north and south walls, which can be reached via internal stairs. The seats in the galleries are traditionally reserved for men, the women sit on the pews in the nave. The choir singing is performed by male choirs from the stands. On the side facing the congregation, the altar shows three scenes from the life of Jesus Christ . In the middle, Jesus and his apostles are shown celebrating the Last Supper , on the left the resurrection of Jesus Christ , on the right Jesus' appearance to the apostle Thomas , who initially doubted the resurrection of Jesus. The ability to create these realistic representations is one of the effects of the decisions made at the Council of Trent in the 16th century. In this context, the 18th century altarpiece should also be seen, depicting the main characters of the Catholic Church in a baroque style that is widespread in Lower Navarre. The painting in the center shows the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in divine light, her arm and her gaze directed upwards. God the Father looks down from above, a scepter in his left hand, a globe with a cross in his right. From two side niches, Peter, recognized by his keys, and Paul of Tarsus , recognized by the sword by which he is supposed to be executed, look down on the community. On the lower part of the altarpiece, paintings on both sides of the tabernacle depict events from the Bible .
  • Outside the center of the village, in the Jauregia district, there is a manor house, which was mentioned as domus de armendaridz as early as 1256 in the possession of the aristocratic Armendarits family . In 1585 it became the property of the Montréal family. In 1634 the title of nobility was raised to a baronate and this new title was the reason to rebuild a large part of the building, so that nothing remains of the original manor house. In the first half of the 19th century the castle was at least a sideline in world history. Carlos María Isidro de Borbón protested against his niece's appointment to the Spanish throne and instigated a civil war, the so-called First Carlist War, which lasted between 1833 and 1839. During this time, Don Carlos found refuge in this castle again and again. It was uninhabited for a long time afterwards and was restored in the 20th century.
“Nieder-Navarra-Haus” in Armendarits
  • Lower Navarre House. This house shows the most important features of a typical house in Lower Navarre. The entrance door is surrounded by ashlar stones so that the entrance as a whole has the shape of a bottle. In the lintel above one of the windows, the date 1634 and the names of the owners, "Pedro eta Maria Ainciondo", are carved on gray rock. A cross in the middle is reminiscent of the disk-shaped grave stelae found in most cemeteries in the Basque Country. Timber framework can be seen in many houses in Lower Navarre, always at the height of the first floor, rarely across the entire width of the facade , usually on one of the sides, as in this house, or in the center. The windows are kept relatively small.
  • Fortified camp from prehistory , on the 334 m high Elhigna hill on the eastern edge of the municipality.
