Further toponyms and mentions of the community were subsequently Çaro (1292), Sanctus Vincentius et Sanctus Martinus de Çaro (1335, documents from Bayonne), Charo (1525, documents from the Chamber of Accounts of Navarra ) and Saro (1703, inspections of the Diocese of Bayonne ) .

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted that Çaro was part of the parish of Saint-Michel and that there was a secular pilgrimage hostel to receive pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela .

On the map of Cassini 1750, the municipality is entered as Cáro , during the French Revolution in 1793 and during the French Consulate eight years later as Caro .

Population development

After a high of over 300 inhabitants in the 1836 census, the number of inhabitants fell by a total of more than 60% to a previous low of 122 inhabitants during short phases of stabilization up to the 1970s. Since then it has stabilized and is rising again.

Attractions

  • Local church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The year 1251 in which the local church was mentioned suggests that it was built in the Middle Ages . At the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century, a restoration was probably carried out in which the western entrance could be furnished. Further restorations took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. The nave houses a nave and is closed with a flat apse to which the sacristy is attached. On the south side a straight sandstone staircase leads to the galleries inside. The bell gable has two openings, one of which is walled up.
